About Me

My tutoring philosophy centers on meeting students where they are and guiding them toward independence and confidence. I focus on creating a supportive environment where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities, not setbacks. I tailor lessons to each student’s strengths and challenges, breaking down complex ideas into manageable steps and celebrating progress along the way. Beyond helping students succeed in tests and assignments, my goal is to develop their critical thinking, self-belief, and love of learning so they can continue to thrive even without a tutor.
Hello! I’m Liting(Lia) Shang. I started my math journey at East Los Angeles College in 2016 before transferring to UC Berkeley in Fall 2018. I graduated from UC Berkeley in May 2020 with a degree in Applied Mathematics and completed my Master’s degree in 2023 after a one-year break.
I have over 8 years of teaching experience, including teaching Trigonometry and Calculus I at East Los Angeles College, working with Firecracker Math, leading classes at UC Berkeley Afterschool University, and volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club to support elementary students in math, science, and English. Recently, I’ve taught 12th-grade AP Calculus and Precalculus at John Henry High School. I also teach Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 at Alameda Community Center, Precalculus, Geometry, and Algebra 2 at Summit Public Charter School, and Algebra 2 and Precalculus at Aspire Public Charter School for 9th to 11th graders.
These experiences have helped me understand how students think and approach problems, enabling me to create personalized study guides tailored to each student’s needs. One proud success was helping a student who had failed Trigonometry twice to ultimately earn an A through a customized study plan.
I am bilingual and have experience teaching math in Mandarin as well. Outside of teaching, I enjoy exploring different kinds of tea, listening to music, hiking, and reading. I consider myself positive, patient, careful, and caring. A special part of my journey that I’d love to share is that I was baptized online on Easter Sunday in 2020.
What Happy Students & Parents Say

Emi.N, Parent
"Lia, thank you so much for such a successful set of math sessions."
Jon.S, Parent
"My daughter finished 8th grade math with some gaps in her skill set. Liting is an experienced teacher who helped my daughter systematically catch up. Not only did she feel more confident when the school year started but she placed into advanced math. Liting is a very organized teacher, knew exactly what material my daughter needed to cover. She was also very responsive and share thorough progress updates. I would highly recommend Liting to any parent looking for an extremely qualified and experienced math teacher. "
